The modern table was devised in 1869 by Dimitri Mendeleev, he arranged the elements by weight and by their chemical properties.
The periodic table displays the symbols and names of the elements, along with information about the structure of their atoms.
The horizontal rows of the periodic table are called PERIODS & are labeled from 1 to 7.
The vertical columns of the periodic table are called GROUPS or FAMILIES and are labeled from 1 to 18.
Group IA are the alkali metals (but not hydrogen, it is a non metal)
Group IIA are the alkaline earth metals
Group IA and IIA are known as s block elements
Group

IIIA IVA VA VIA
VIIA 0 are d block elements
Group IIIA is known as boron family
Group IVA is known as carbon family
Group VA is known as nitrogen family
Group VIA is known as oxygen family or chalcogens
Group VIIA is known as halogen
Group 0 is known as noble gas and it is also known as inert gases
The s and p block elements are called representative elements
Groups in the middle of the periodic table IIIB IVB VB VIB VIIB VIIIB IB IIB are called transition metals which is known as the d block elements
Lanthanides and actinides are f block elements called as inner transition elements and are also called as rare earth elements.
The periodic table is used to identify elemental characteristics, classify all matters and to predict reactions between elements.
