Main Examination (mains)

The Main written examination (Descriptive Type) usually takes place in October-November. It comprises of 9 papers in all and duration of each paper is 3 hrs and Each 300 Marks.

Papers 3 to 9 WILL alone be considered for ranking. (i.e.) A total of 2000 marks.

Literature in one of the following languages: Arabic, Assamese, Bengali, Chinese, English, French, German, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Marathi, Malayalam, Oriya, Pali, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu.

The following combinations of subjects are not allowed:

Political Science & International Relation and Public Administration.
Commerce & Accountancy and Management.
Anthropology and Sociology.
Mathematics and Statistics.
Agriculture and Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science.
Management & Public Administration.
Civil Engineering, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering – not more than one Engineering subject.
Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science and Medical Science.

The Main Examination is descriptive written test, which is held around October/November every year.

Note: the UPSC have discretion to fix qualifying marks in any or all the subjects of the examination.

Scoring 50% (or) more (1000 or more out of 2000) definitely sufficient to qualify for the Interview.

The Interview – The Personality Test

The interview calls are sent in March-April of the following year and they take place in the month of April-May. The Board of interviewers look for a well-adjusted personality with the social traits, integrity and qualities of leadership. The number of candidates called for the interview is not less than twice the number of vacancies.

The personality test carries a maximum of 300 marks. So the final selection will be based on the marks scored out of 2300. If your score is 1300+ or more you will get Top rankings.
